Gathering in Christ: Finding Abundance in Community
Gospel Reading: John 6:1-21
July 28, 2024 — In today’s fast-paced world, we often come together for different reasons such, as sports events, clubs, schools, and more. But what makes gathering in a church setting unique? Pastor Heather’s sermon today delves into the significance of uniting as a community of faith, drawing inspiration from the moment when Jesus fed 5,000 individuals.
Why We Gather
The primary reason we come together as a church is because of our faith in God and Jesus. Unlike other social gatherings, church communities are united by a shared belief that becomes the foundation for worship, service, learning, and fellowship. Today’s sermon reminds us of the importance of our baptismal promises, emphasizing the value of being part of a loving and devoted community in our spiritual walk. Just as 5,000 people gathered to witness Jesus’ teachings and miracles, we, too, gathered to experience Christ’s presence in our community.
What Happens When We Leave
As we depart from our gatherings, we take the experience of abundance with us:
- We carry fullness: We leave with a sense of God’s love and grace, ready to share it with others. The symbolism of two fish representing unity and five loaves representing grace implies that our gatherings serve to unite us and provide us with the opportunity to collectively experience God’s grace. The story of feeding the 5,000 reminds us that we often have more than we realize. We can discover an abundance that surpasses our expectations by sharing what we have.
- We find direction: Just as Jesus came to the disciples on the stormy sea, our faith helps guide us when we feel lost or uncertain. Whether we interpret the feeding of the 5,000 literally or symbolically, the story emphasizes God’s abundant ability to provide for all our needs.
- We invite others: Our experience of abundance encourages us to invite others to join our community and experience God’s love. Despite our differences in views, backgrounds, and experiences, we can come together in God’s love. At the recent ELCA Gathering in New Orleans, our youth were reminded they are loved regardless of their individual characteristics.
Taking Abundance with Us
When we leave our gatherings, we carry the fullness of God’s love and grace with us. The sermon offers a new perspective on the disciples’ boat trip after the feeding of the 5,000. It suggests that even when we feel lost or misguided, Jesus comes to us and guides us to where we need to be.
Conclusion
Uniting as a faith community serves multiple purposes: it brings us together because of Christ, helps us recognize God’s abundance in our lives, and equips us to share that fullness with others. As we come together, we’re reminded of our unity in diversity, experience God’s grace, and are prepared to navigate life’s challenges. When we leave our gatherings, we take this abundance with us, with the hope of inspiring others to join us in experiencing the abundant life through Christ. By understanding the power of gathering, we can better appreciate the unique role it plays in our faith journey and our ability to impact the world around us.
