Serve Others

Our mission statement is – “Seek God. Serve Others.” In daily practice that means we invite God into our lives by studying the scriptures and Jesus’ example. In response to God’s abundant blessings we are called to serve others with Christ like love. At Abiding Presence, every member is challenged to find a ministry where your talents can be used to serve others as a leader within the congregation or out in the greater community. Whatever your gift, people’s lives will be changed by your sharing.

Serve your fellow APLC members and guests

In the daily life of our congregation you’ll find many opportunities to grown in discipleship, from offering a simple handshake and smile, to intentionally offering your prayer and support, or serving in teaching or leadership roles.

Abiding Presence is known for making folks feel welcome and a great place to start serving is on a Welcome Team. Handshakes, hugs and answering, “Where is …?” Teams of volunteers greet all who arrive for worship and help with directions and worship materials.
Love the smell of bacon cooking or the action of flipping pancakes? Join one of the Sunday morning breakfast teams to prepare and serve a hearty breakfast each week.
Martin Luther described our weekly liturgy as “the work of the people.” Abiding Presence welcomes a host of volunteers each week in the form of lectors, worship assistants, cantors, altar preparation, communion servers, sound and video techs.
Teachers, discussion leaders, mentors, and helpers in Sunday School classes and small learning groups keep our faith formation ministries dynamic.
Life brings challenge. When babies arrive, sickness, or hospitalization recovery occurs, CARE ministry can provide meals for families learning to live life in new ways. When God calls a loved one home, the CARE team can provide a meal and time of fellowship for the grieving family.
When there are events, people, or circumstances that trouble you, our prayer ministry serves to raise a multitude of prayers seeking God’s presence.
Serving as a Stephen minister means walking with those who are homebound, sick, dying, depressed or just need a person to talk to. Stephen Ministers are specially trained to provide one-to-one Christian care.
Offering a variety of relevant learning means opportunities to share your teaching or facilitating talents.
Group leaders often say they aren’t sure who received the bigger blessing, the teacher or the student.

You’d be a blessing in Sunday School, a weekly or monthly adult study, or a fellowship group for men or
women.

Serve in the greater community

Each year the congregation selects several Mission Partners to support, learning about the life changing ministry being accomplished and how we can be involved through volunteer service or financial donations. You can make a difference with a few hours or a few dollars.

Quarterly Blood Drives for the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center means lives saved.
From baking and serving homemade cookies to gathering hygiene kits, to sock drives. APLC partners with Haven in many ways. Several times a year there are specific ways to donate.
APLC partners with the San Antonio Lutheran Cluster of Churches to partner with a family and build a home each fall.  Part of that partnership is a financial commitment we support with various fundraising events.
Teams regularly build wheel chair ramps for individuals physically unable to leave their home. In just a few hours you’ll be the difference between stuck at home and free to move about.
We work year round making quilts and collecting items for school and personal care kits.
Supporting families in the midst of complicated transplantation processes, Thanksgiving food drives and Christmas gifts are a welcome relief.
As grieving families gather for evening support sessions, APLC cooks provide a family style meal that relieves the after school/work time crunch and facilitates participation.
APLC has a long history of funding clean, safe water wells in rural Africa.
