Each month, Abiding Presence will highlight a Stephen Minister, showcasing their unique journey and the inspiration behind their commitment to serving the community. This month’s feature is on Linda Seewald.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what do you enjoy the most about Abiding Presence?
A: I have been a member of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church for twelve years. My family and I joined the church because we were looking for a church where we would be valued, respected, and included. Before we joined, I met with the pastors and asked a simple, pointed question.
“When you all sing the song, All Are Welcome, do you really mean it?” The answer from both pastors was very affirming. They both said how much the ELCA values inclusion and how welcome we would feel at APLC. No response has ever been more true.
We joined that year, and my daughter, Emily, who is now 25 and a mental health therapist, started Confirmation classes. During my time at APLC, I have served on the Board representing Care and Nurturing, and currently I am a member of the Altar Guild and Stephen Ministry.
Q: Tell us about your Stephen Ministry experience.
A: I have been a Stephen Minister for almost five years, and I find it very gratifying to care for people who are going through difficult times. I felt a calling to be a part of this ministry, and I am quite sure that I have received more than I have given to the lovely people I have been blessed to serve.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Since I have retired from a long career in education, I spend quite a bit of my time volunteering for a program called C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocate). I am a Guardian Ad Litem for children who have been legally removed from their home due to parental abuse or neglect. I visit the children regularly, attend hearings on their behalf and generally advocate for each of them in all matters.
I have lived in Boerne for the past five years and spend much of my time caring for Ember and Sunny, my dog and cat. I also love hiking, gardening, and practicing mindfulness and meditation. Throughout my time at APLC, I have made some wonderful friends, and I feel blessed to be a part of our unique and giving community.
