Each month, Abiding Presence will highlight a Stephen Minister, showcasing their unique journey and the inspiration behind their commitment to serving the community. This month’s feature is on Hayden Stewart.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: I was born in Pittsburgh Pa, lived there for nine years. Our family moved to Phoenix AZ. where I lived for 35 years. I have lived in San Antonio for 38 years. The last job I had was with the Wrigley Co. for 31 years where I held the positions of sales representative, Key Account Manager in Phoenix and was transferred to San Antonio to be Regional Manager of South and West Texas. After going through a divorce, I met and married Donna. We have been married for 29 years, the best years of my life. We each have three children and all six of them are a blessing. I am retired and enjoy life every day.
Q: Tell us about your Stephen Ministry experience.
A: I have been a Stephen Minister for 22 years. I was a Stephen Ministry leader for 21 years, working with my wife, Donna and Jarrell Pruitt in that position. Gizelle Henricksen and Sheryl Stanton are currently doing an excellent job as Stephen Ministry leaders. I feel I have a gift for helping others. I believe God continues to work through me as I listen and provide support for others going through a difficult time in their lives.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: My hobby is playing Fantasy baseball and Fantasy NBA basketball. Ask my wife if I spend too much time doing that. Donna and I enjoy spending time visiting our six children, who live in six different states. I enjoy working in our yard and helping Donna with her potted plants and rooting for and attending Spurs games. I have seen major league baseball in 17 different cities. My favorite sport to watch is NHRA national hot rod association racing and I have been to races in eight different cities.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about Abiding Presence?
A: I was raised in a Jehovah Witness household. They are told they are the only true religion; all others are false and Pegan. I do not believe what they are told. Because of that experience, I did not have a relationship with God until I attended APLC. I was baptized, and married Donna at APLC. At APLC I heard that God loves me and I have felt His love from members in this congregation. I value my church family every day.
