Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Sermon — June 16, 2024

June 16, 2024 by Senior Pastor

Seeing God’s Kingdom through parables

Gospel Reading: Mark 4:26-34

June 16, 2024 — In today’s sermon, Pastor Steve demonstrated how Jesus frequently utilized parables, drawing upon various elements of agricultural life to vividly portray the significance of God’s kingdom.

Finding God’s Kingdom in Everyday Life: Lessons from the Mustard Seed

  • The sermon discusses God’s efforts to bring people back to His kingdom throughout biblical history.
  • Jesus’ use of parables is explained as a way to teach about God’s kingdom.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by life’s challenges, caught between worrying about the past and fearing the future? In a recent sermon, Pastor Steve shared a powerful message about finding peace and purpose in the present moment by seeking God’s will. Through personal anecdotes and biblical teachings, he reminds us that God’s kingdom is accessible to everyone, right here and now, in the ordinary moments of our daily lives.

The Power of “Thy Will Be Done”

Pastor Steve introduces a simple four-word phrase that helps him stay grounded in the present: “Thy will be done.” This phrase, taken from the Lord’s Prayer, serves as a reminder to focus on God’s plan rather than getting lost in anxiety about the past or future. He shares a personal story about a stressful situation involving passport applications for a family vacation. By repeating, “Thy will be done,” he was able to find calm amidst the chaos and ultimately resolve the issue.

God’s Kingdom Throughout History

Pastor Steve explores how God has been trying to connect with humanity since the beginning of time. From the Garden of Eden to the teachings of Jesus, the message has consistently been about turning back to God and recognizing that His kingdom is available to us now. Jesus used parables to help people understand this concept in new ways, challenging the prevailing worldview of power and force.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Jesus often used agricultural themes in his parables to illustrate the nature of God’s kingdom. The parable of the mustard seed is particularly significant. Unlike expectations of grand imagery, Jesus compares God’s kingdom to a small mustard seed that grows into a common bush. This unexpected comparison teaches us several important lessons:

  1. Small beginnings can lead to significant growth.
  2. God’s kingdom operates differently from worldly power structures
  3. Everyone has equal access to God’s kingdom.
  4. We have a choice to participate in God’s kingdom.

Finding God’s Kingdom in the Ordinary

The mustard seed parable challenges us to see God’s kingdom in everyday, ordinary things. It’s not about grand gestures or perfect circumstances. Instead, it’s about recognizing that God’s presence can be found in the simple moments of our lives – even in situations that might seem messy or uncontrollable.

Conclusion

Pastor Steve’s sermon reminds us that God’s kingdom is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or circumstances. By focusing on the present moment and seeking God’s will, we can find peace and purpose in our daily lives. The next time you feel overwhelmed or anxious, repeat the phrase “Thy will be done” and look for signs of God’s kingdom in the ordinary moments around you. Remember, like the mustard seed, small acts of faith can grow into something beautiful and meaningful.
