Aligning Our Will with God’s
Gospel Reading: Mark 6:14-29
July 14, 2024 — In our daily lives, we often face choices between following our own desires and aligning ourselves with God’s will. Pastor Steve explored this theme using the imagery of a plumb line and the contrasting stories of King Herod and Jesus.
You can explore the Gospel of Mark in this YouTube playlist by Phil Ruge-Jones.
The Plumb Line: A Tool for Spiritual Alignment
A plumb line is a simple tool consisting of a weight suspended on a string. It is used in construction to ensure that walls are perfectly straight. The Bible uses the plumb line as a metaphor for God’s perfect standard. Just as builders use a plumb line to check their work, we can use God’s teachings to guide our actions and decisions.
Herod’s Story: A Cautionary Tale
Pastor Steve demonstrated how Herod’s actions in Mark 6:14-29 starkly contrast with Jesus’ teachings, representing two distinct approaches to life and power. Here are some key points:
- Power and selfishness: Herod was obsessed with maintaining his power, even at the cost of others’ lives.
- Dysfunctional relationships: Herod’s family dynamics were complicated and harmful.
- Fear and insecurity: Herod’s decisions were often driven by fear of losing control.
- Destructive choices: Ultimately, Herod’s selfish desires led to the death of John the Baptist.
Herod’s Story: A Cautionary Tale
- Act with humility: Jesus instructed his disciples to travel simply, relying on God and the kindness of others.
- Depend on God: Trust that God will provide what you need to share his message.
- Be persistent: If people don’t listen in one place, move on to the next without holding grudges.
- Remember your authority comes from Jesus: We’re not acting on our own power, but through Christ’s.
- Focus on planting seeds: Our job is to share the message; how it grows is up to God.
Jesus’ Example: A Different Path
In contrast to Herod, Jesus demonstrates a radically different approach to life:
- Sharing power: Jesus empowered his disciples to heal and teach others.
- Inclusive community: Jesus welcomed all people, creating a new kind of family.
- Serving others: Instead of seeking praise, Jesus focused on meeting people’s needs.
- Valuing life: Jesus blessed and welcomed children, showing care for the vulnerable.
The Challenge for Us Today
Today’s sermon reminds us that we all have moments when we act selfishly or fearfully, like Herod. However, we also have the opportunity to choose a different path. Here are some ways to choose a selfless path:
- Self-awareness: Recognize when we’re acting out of selfishness or fear.
- Daily choices: We can turn towards God’s way in small decisions each day.
- Confession and forgiveness: Acknowledge our shortcomings and accept God’s grace.
- Community support: Gather with others to encourage one another in following God’s will.
Conclusion
Aligning our will with God’s perfect standard isn’t easy, but it’s worth taking. By regularly examining our motivations and actions, we can gradually move closer to living the abundant life God intends for us. Let’s challenge ourselves to be more like Jesus in daily interactions, seeking to serve others and build a community of love and justice.
