The Power of Humility and Love: Lessons from Jesus and Modern Examples

Gospel Reading: Mark 9:30-37

September 22, 2024 — We commonly associate success with power, wealth, and fame in our rapidly changing society. However, spiritual teachings, particularly those of Jesus, offer a different perspective on what truly matters in life. In today’s sermon, Pastor Heather explores the lessons from Jesus’s teachings and how they apply to our modern world, emphasizing the importance of humility, love, and service to others.

Jesus’s Teachings on True Greatness

The Gospel of Mark tells us about a time when Jesus’s disciples argued about the greatest among them. While this might seem odd today, it’s a human reaction. The disciples, coming from a tradition of conquerors and deliverers, expected Jesus to be an influential leader who would free them from oppression.

However, Jesus surprised them by teaching that true greatness comes not from worldly power but from humility and service. He used the example of a child to illustrate this point. In their culture, children had no social status or power, yet Jesus said that welcoming a child in his name was like welcoming him and, by extension, God. In God’s eyes, everyone is equally valuable and worthy of love, regardless of their social status, wealth, or achievements.

The Challenge of Living Jesus’s Teachings

Living out these teachings can be challenging in our modern society, which often values being “number one” or the “top dog.” We see this in many areas of life, from sports competitions to business success stories.

However, Jesus’s message reminds us that our true impact often comes not from grand, public achievements but from the small acts of love and kindness we show those around us. When we positively impact those in our circle, the effects ripple outward, touching many more lives than we might realize.

Remembering What Truly Matters

To illustrate this point, consider the philosophy of Charles Schultz, creator of the Peanuts cartoon. He pointed out that while we might struggle to name recent Nobel Prize winners or Academy Award recipients, we can easily recall teachers, friends, and loved ones who have made a difference. What truly matters is not our achievements or accolades but the love we share and our positive impact on others.

Conclusion

Jesus’s teachings challenge us to rethink our definition of greatness and success. According to these lessons, actual power lies not in worldly achievements but in our capacity to love, serve, and support others, especially in their moments of vulnerability. In our daily lives, we can practice this by:

  1. Valuing and respecting all people, regardless of their status or achievements
  2. Focusing on making a positive impact within our circle of influence
  3. Supporting loved ones not just in their successes but also in their struggles
  4. Remembering that small acts of kindness and love can have far-reaching effects

By embracing these principles, we can create a more compassionate and connected world, one relationship at a time.
