A Wilderness Story: Steve Johnson

March 12, 2025 by Senior Pastor

This Lenten season, we gather to pray, fast from the outside world, and share ourselves with each other in worship. During worship, you will experience different stories, “Wilderness Stories” within scripture, within each other, and, if you are willing, within yourself.

Good evening.  For those that may not know me, my name is Steve Johnson and Lynn and I have been members of Abiding Presence since 2014. I am currently the church council Assistant Executive Director.

Steve & Lynn Johnson

When I examine my personal life in the context of my reflections on our passage from Luke, it is intriguing to me to see how the ancient wisdom of Jesus still resonates with my contemporary life experiences. The passage recounts Jesus’ journey into the wilderness, where he faces three temptations from the devil. These temptations—turning stones to bread, gaining worldly power, and proving His divinity—serve as powerful allegories for the struggles that individuals like me continue to face in the modern world today.

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, the temptation to prioritize material needs over spiritual fulfillment is as prevalent as ever. Just as Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger, I often find myself pursuing material things that get instant gratification rather than actual material needs. The convenience of technology and the lure of consumerism are a constant tug in my life toward a superficial focus on physical comfort, often at the expense of emotional and spiritual well-being. To counter this urge I often remember Jesus’ response, “Man shall not live by bread alone,” which reminds me of the importance of nurturing our souls and seeking deeper, more meaningful forms of fulfillment.

The second temptation, where the devil offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, mirrors the modern struggle for power, fame, and success. In an era dominated by social media and the pressure to project a perfect image, I sometimes grapple with the desire for external validation and recognition.I find myself focused on presenting “my perfect life” to friends and family on my social media and counting the likes!Jesus’ firm refusal, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only,” serves as a reminder to me to remain steadfast in focusing on what is important and to prioritize my relationship with God over worldly acclaim.

The third temptation, where Jesus is challenged to throw Himself from the pinnacle of the temple to prove His divinity, parallels the modern compulsion to prove one’s worth and capabilities to others. In a competitive society, I often felt the need and pressure to demonstrate my competence and achievements in my corporate life and career. Jesus’ response, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test,” models and encourages me to trust in MY inherent worth and to avoid seeking validation through excessive focus on my own personal actions. Instead, it speaks to me to cultivate a sense of self-assurance and faith in my God-given abilities.

The temptations faced by Jesus offer me timeless insights into the struggles of my modern personal life. In reflecting on the parallels between Jesus’ trials in the desert and modern life, I find valuable lessons in how to navigate the complexities of my contemporary existence.By resisting the temptations of materialism, power, and validation, and by focusing on spiritual growth, integrity, and self-worth, it helps me in my quest to lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Just as Jesus emerged from the wilderness with a renewed sense of purpose and strength, I too strive to overcome my challenges and grow in my faith and resilience. By taking time to reflect on His responses and striving to apply these principles to my daily life, I believe my faith has helped me better navigate the trials I encounter and give me a stronger sense of purpose and spiritual well-being. I pray the wisdom of this passage, finding strength in our faith and remaining true to our values, continues to speak to us as we journey through the wilderness of modern existence.
