Each month, Abiding Presence will highlight a Stephen Minister, showcasing their unique journey and the inspiration behind their commitment to serving the community. This month’s feature is on Sue Evans.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: I am originally an Okie, born and raised in Enid, Oklahoma. I moved to San Antonio in 1999. I met my husband the first week here and decided to stay. We have been married 24 years and have two wonderful children, Alex (20) and Addy (18).
I started out as a Marketing Director at Rolling Oaks Mall before realizing that position was not feeding my soul. I went to a temp agency to try and figure out what I really wanted to do with my life and that day I was offered a job at Abiding Presence as the Administrative Assistant. My heart was hooked. I stayed and worked my way up to the Business Manager before I left after 19 years to challenge myself again.
I went to work for an assisted living, but something just didn’t feel the same. I searched for non-profit work again and am now employed at a convent in San Antonio. Peace again.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about Abiding Presence?
A: The people have always been my love. Being able to help others is something I just need to do, and Abiding Presence allows me to do that in so many ways. You can be involved in everything, nothing or a little in between, but still feel like you are part of a family. The sense of community is strong at Abiding Presence.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Spending time with my family and friends is something I strive to do all the time. It seems like I am busy and just on the go most of the time. I hate just sitting. I have to be doing something and my family gets to tag along with me. I love reading and eating good food, and I hate to say it, but I’m watching TikTok (I‘m working on watching less in the new year!)
Q: Tell us about your Stephen Ministry experience.
A: As a college student I thought I was going to become a psychologist, however, I didn’t want to go to school forever. The compassion to help others has always been part of me. As I was working in the church office, I would hear about the Stephen Ministry program, but thought you needed to be biblically versed in order to do the ministry. When I finally talked to Pastor Steve about my interest, I realized I could do this. I have loved being with this group of people and feeling like I am making a difference. This ministry fills my soul.
