Abiding Presence Lutheran Church gathered on Sunday to celebrate the remarkable careers and upcoming retirements of two beloved musical leaders: Dr. Shelbie Simmons, Minister of Music, and Angus McLeod, Sanctuary Choir Director.
Their dedication to excellence in sacred music, commitment to volunteer leadership, and loyal service have enriched countless lives and will continue to inspire the congregation for years.
Dr. Shelbie Simmons: A Half-Century of Musical Ministry
Shelbie concludes an extraordinary journey spanning
more than 50 years of dedicated service across churches in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Texas. During her decade at Abiding Presence, she has overseen numerous milestone achievements that have enriched the congregation’s musical worship experience:
- Led the successful 2015 campaign to enhance the church organ with new oboe and bassoon ranks
- Orchestrated the memorable 2017 concert series commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
- Guided the music ministry through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining continuity in worship
- Organized numerous festival worship services, concerts, music camps, and talent shows
Her leadership exemplified this scripture, fostering a robust volunteer-led music ministry encompassing singers, instrumentalists, ensemble directors, and cantors.
Angus McLeod: A Second Chapter of Musical Leadership
Angus’s journey to Abiding Presence began in 2020 following his retirement from public school teaching during the COVID pandemic. What started as an unexpected path became three and a half years of dedicated service as Sanctuary Choir Director. Despite facing personal challenges, including recovery from a spinal stroke in 2021, Angus has led the Sanctuary Choir with distinction and devotion.
His tenure has been marked by:
- Leadership of the church’s premier vocal ensemble
- Twice-weekly rehearsals and regular worship leadership
- Collaboration with Dr. Simmons in building an exceptional music program
- Inspiring dedication from volunteer singers in service to God
